José Manuel Santos Ascarza OCD (born April 2, 1916 in Llay Llay in the Región de Valparaíso , Chile , † September 14, 2007 ) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Concepción .

Life

José Manuel Santos Ascarza joined the Order of the Discalced Carmelites (OCD) and studied Philosophy and Catholic Theology at the Seminary in Santiago de Chile and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . There he earned a degree in canon law and was in philosophy doctorate . He was ordained a priest on December 7, 1938 . He was a professor and later Regens of the seminary in Valparaíso and professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso .

Pope Pius XII appointed him in 1955 bishop of Valdivia in the south of Chile, a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Concepción. He was ordained bishop on December 4, 1955 by Sebastiano Baggio , then Apostolic Nuncio in Chile and later Cardinal Chamberlain . 1956 Santos Ascarza was also Apostolic Administrator in Osorno . He was a participant in the Second Vatican Council and in 1968 at the CELAM conference in Medellín . In 1983 he was appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Concepción (Santissima Concezione) by Pope John Paul II . Santos Ascarza was president of the Chilean Bishops' Conference several times and was a member of the Pontifical Council “Cor Unum” . In 1988 his resignation was approved by John Paul II.
