Storm at Daybreak is a 1933 American film starring Kay Francis , Walter Huston and Nils Asther .
action
The action takes place during the 1st Balkan War . The Serbian Major Dushan and his wife Irina become involved in the war. During the fighting, Irina, who is unhappy in her marriage, meets the Hungarian officer Geza, her husband's best friend. They both fall in love. After much torment of conscience, Irina decides to choose suicide rather than bring shame on her husband.
background
1932 was the annus mirabilis for Kay Francis , who not only switched from Paramount and the status of a supporting actress as a star and with higher salaries to Warner Brothers . She had also appeared in three of her best films: Journey of No Return and Jewel Robbery, each alongside William Powell, and Trouble in Paradise , for which she personally brought Ernst Lubitsch back to Paramount. In the following year, Francis was already firmly established as a popular actress in romantic love stories.
The film had already starred with Walter Huston in her screen debut Gentlemen of the Press from 1929. Her co-star Nils Asther struggled with difficulties with the rise of talkies and it wasn't until 1932 that an established studio contracted him with MGM again. His roles as the sadistic lover of Joan Crawford in Letty Lynton and as the Chinese warlord in The Bitter Tea of General Yen pointed to a successful career, but shortly after the filming of Storm at Daybreak was finished , the studio released the actor again.
Theatrical release
Production costs of $ 280,000 were in the lower average for an A-film at MGM. Domestic revenue of $ 302,000 and an additional $ 334,000 from overseas produced a cumulative total income of $ 636,000 and net income of $ 121,000. In view of the difficult economic environment, that was a very good result.
