Carlos Holmes Trujillo García (born September 23, 1951 in Cartago , † January 26, 2021 in Bogotá ) was a Colombian politician ( PLC , Centro Democrático ). He held several ministerial offices, including foreign and defense ministers of the country.

Life

Trujillo studied law at the Universidad del Cauca and business administration at the Sophia University in Tokyo (Japan). From 2001 onwards he was lecturer at the private University Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Bogotá .

From January 1988 to January 1990 he was mayor of the city of Cali . He was a member of the National Constituent Assembly, which drafted the constitution , which came into force in 1991 after a referendum. From February 1992 to August 1993 he was Colombia's Minister of Education in the government of César Gaviria , and from June 1997 to January 1998 Minister of the Interior in the government of Ernesto Samper . He was Colombian ambassador to the Organization of American States (1995–1997) as well as to Austria (1998–1999), Russia (1999–2001), Switzerland (2004–2006) and Belgium (2006–2011).

He was Foreign Minister from August 2018 to November 2019; then he was Minister of Defense in the government of Iván Duque until his death . Trujillo was initially a member of the Partido Liberal Colombiano, then became one of the closest confidante of the incumbent President Álvaro Uribe Vélez from 2002 and then a member of the right-wing conservative party Centro Democrático, which was founded by him in 2013 .

Trujillo died on 26 January 2021 aged 69 after being because of the January 11, 2021 COVID-19 disease infection initially to a hospital in Barranquilla admitted and because of its deteriorated condition two days later in a military hospital in Bogotá had been moved .
