Carlos Spierer

Carlos Spierer (born February 27, 1963 in Stockholm ) is a German conductor .

Life

Carlos Spierer grew up in Berlin. His father Leon Spierer , who was first concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra from 1963 to 1993  , awakened his love for music at an early age. Carlos Spierer began his musical training (violin and piano) in early childhood. He later studied violin with Fredell Lack at the University of Houston and in 1984 switched to Klauspeter Seibel's conducting class at the Hamburg University of Music . He attended several master classes , including a. 1987 with Leonard Bernstein as part of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , in whose conducting competition he was awarded first prize. From 1986 to 1990 he directed the Harvestehuder Sinfonieorchester Hamburg .

After successfully completing his degree, he began his career at the Kiel Opera House in 1990 . This was followed by positions as artistic and musical director of the Gävle Symphony Orchestra in Sweden (1997–2000), as artistic director and chief conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería in Mexico City (2003–2005) and as musical director of the State Youth Symphony Orchestra of Hesse (2007). From 2003 to 2011 Carlos Spierer was general music director of the Stadttheater Gießen ; two German premieres, namely of the works Lo Schiavo by C. Gomez and Goya by Gian Carlo Menotti , were among the highlights of his final season.

Guest engagements have taken him to many well-known opera houses and orchestras, including the San Francisco Opera, Komische Oper Berlin, Oper Frankfurt, Oper Tallinn, Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Brussels Radio Orchestra, HR Symphony Orchestra Frankfurt, Philharmonic Orchestra Buenos Aires, Costa Rica National Symphony Orchestra, the Saaremaa Festival in Estonia, Odense Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfônica de Paraíba, Philharmonic Ensemble and NHK Tokyo, NRK Radio Orchester-Oslo, Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra Tampere, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Stockholm, the Orquesta Sinfonica de Mineria in Mexico City and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra.

A special focus of his work is always working with children and young people. The mediation of classical music, the introduction to music and theater as well as the promotion of musical talents was and is always a central part of his work for Carlos Spierer. He was a juror at the Berlin National Singing Competition and conducted the final concert of the Bremen Piano Competition . Since 2012 he has moderated and directed a series of children's concerts for the Komische Oper Berlin . There he conducted the children's operas Robin Hood by Frank Schwemmer as well as Die Schneekönigin and Pinocchio , two works by Pierangelo Valtinoni, whose Italian premieres he had previously directed in Vicenza (Italy).

Awards

In 1999 Carlos Spierer received the ECHO Klassik Prize for his recording of Paddington's First Concert and Poulenc's Babar der Elephant with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra (Polygram). His recording of works by the Swedish composer Oscar Byström with the Gävle Symphony Orchestra was the 1998 CD of the year for BBC Music Magazine.
