Carlos de Candamo

Carlos González de Candamo y Rivero (born February 15, 1871 in London , United Kingdom , † February 16, 1946 in Paris , France ) was a Peruvian diplomat , fencer , rugby and tennis player.

biography

Carlos de Candamo was born in London to a Peruvian ambassador. His uncle was the Peruvian President Manuel Candamo . Since his father became ambassador in Paris , he and his family moved to the French capital. There he took part in the first French tennis championships in 1891 , the predecessor of today's French Open . A year later he won the championship as captain of the rugby team of the Racing Club de France . His two brothers also played in his team. The final was chaired by Pierre de Coubertin , later founder of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Carlos de Candamo participated in the 1900 Olympic Games as the first and only Olympic athlete for Peru. He competed in two fencing competitions , but could not win a medal.

From 1909 to 1922 he was a member of the IOC. In May 1901 he became Peruvian Ambassador to the United Kingdom and later to France, where he signed the Versailles Peace Treaty for Peru .
