Carloway ( Gaelic : Càrlabhagh ) is a village in the municipality of Uig on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis , in the Outer Hebrides . In 1991 500 people lived there.

The district

Carloway is touristic thanks to its many historical sites such as Garenin Blackhouse Village or Broch Dun Carloway .

The Carloway Bridge is one of Scotland's oldest overpasses. It was built in the middle of the 19th century. The bridge crosses the Carloway River and Pentland Road, which leads to Carloway Pier and Stornoway in the other direction.

The Carloway district, which was previously divided between the parishes of Lochs and Uig , became an independent civil district in 1859 .

The district is divided into eight parishes: Knock Carloway , Park Carloway , Doune Carloway , Upper Carloway , Garenin , Borrowston , Kirivick, and Dalmore . The estate begins on the grass grate between Garynahine and Callanish and ends at the Bragar cattle gate , leaving Shawbost towards Bragar.

Carloway owns many historic buildings. A Pictish Broch in Dun Carloway, a Blackhouse Village in Garenin, and many others, including a standing stone called "Clach an Tursa" in Upper Carloway.

Black houses, a museum in the village

The district is known in the Western Isles for its agricultural fair and Highland Games held annually on the first Wednesday in August at the show ground behind Carloway School in the center. In 2011 the 58th Agricultural Fair took place and was attended by 2500 people, more than in the previous year. It is the longest running agricultural fair and highland games on the island. In Carloway is one of the mills for the production and marketing of Harris Tweed .

There are three roads that connect Carloway to the main town of Stornoway. The first route is the main northbound road that goes through Shawbost, Bragar and Barvas, where it splits into a route to Stornoway and a route to Ness. The second route is the main southbound road that goes through Breasclete, Callanish and Leurbost. The third and fastest way from Carloway to Stornoway is the Pentland Road which leads straight to Stornoway.
