Carlson Companies ( Carlson ) is a United States company headquartered in Minnetonka , Minneapolis , Minnesota . The company was one of the largest privately owned family businesses in the United States.

In 2016 part of the company, the hotel business, was sold to the Chinese HNA Tourism Group ; it is now listed as the Carlson Rezidor .

By 2016, Carlson Companies had around 170,000 employees in around 150 countries; including 5,300 travel agencies, a tourism marketing company, 1,700 hotels, holiday resorts, restaurants and cruise ships.

In 2007, the subsidiary Regent Seven Seas Cruises , which offers luxury cruises , was sold to the investment company Apollo Management .

In 2010 the subsidiary Regent International Hotels was sold to the Taiwanese company Formosa International Hotels .
