Carmen ad Deum

The so-called Carmen ad Deum ( Latin for “A Song to God”) is the literary-historical title of an Old High German translation of the Latin hymn “Sancte sator suffragator”, a rhyming prayer in the Old Bavarian dialect from the end of the 8th century to the beginning of the 9th. Century.

The hymn is handed down in a manuscript from the Tegernsee Monastery , which is dated to the second half of the 9th century and is now in the Bavarian State Library (BSB Clm 19410, p. 39–41). In the Tegernsee manuscript, the German translation can be found alongside the Latin verse. Due to the archaic-looking language image compared to that from the time the manuscript was created, a copy based on an older template from around the year 800 from the time of the Carolingian Renaissance is assumed and this is from a translinear form. Reichenau Monastery is assumed to be the place of origin of this original model, and an Anglo-Saxon or Irish cleric is generally considered to be the author of the translation. The Tegernsee manuscript is related to the person, or the period and time of activity, of Passau Bishop Ermenrich von Ellwangen .
