Carmine Gori-Merosi

Carmine Gori-Merosi OSB (born February 14, 1810 in Subiaco , Kingdom of Italy , † September 15, 1886 ) was an Italian Commendatar Abbot and Cardinal .

Life

Gori-Merosi was born on February 14, 1810 in Subiaco in what was then the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy . He came from a noble family. His father was Giuseppe Gori, who was related to the Giustiniani family in a maternal line. His mother was Maria Benedetta Merosi. The two family names were hereditary linked. Gori-Merosi began his training at the monastery school of Subiaco and then went to study at the Athenaeum in Rome. In 1832 he was ordained a priest . For almost twenty years he worked for the Holy See quietly and without being mentioned in any documents . It was not until 1847 that he took over a position in the Vatican administration. From 1869 to 1881 he was Subdatar of the Apostolic Signature .

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him cardinal in the consistory on November 10, 1884, he received the title of Santa Maria ad Martyres and a few days later was appointed Commendatar Abbot of Subiaco. He had already consecrated the restored Santa Maria della Valle church there in 1870 . He was secretary of the Congregation for Bishops . In 1886 the cardinal, who was valued for his education and virtuous life, died of pneumonia. He was first buried in Rome on the Campo Verano . In 1887, however, his bones were transferred to Subiaco.
