Carol Barnett

Carol Edith Barnett (born May 23, 1949 in Dubuque , Iowa ) is an American composer and flautist.

Barnett studied composition with Dominick Argento and Paul Fetler , piano with Bernard Weiser and flute with Emil J. Niosi at the University of Minnesota . From 1992 to 2001 she was composer in residence with the Dale Warland Singers , and since then she has taught at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.

In addition to choral works, Barnett composed instrumental music for sometimes unusual ensembles such as mixed choir and soprano saxophone, percussion and bass trombone or clarinet, piano and tabla. In her compositions she often uses motifs from the Jewish liturgy or Eastern European folk music. In 2003 she received the Nancy Van de Vate International Prize for Opera for her chamber opera Snow . At the Diversity Festival in Red Wing 2006, her composition Meeting at Seneca Falls was performed.
