Carol Welsman

Carol Welsman (born September 29, 1960 in Toronto ) is a Canadian jazz singer and pianist . She is the granddaughter of the composer and conductor Frank Welsman and sister of the composer John Welsman .

Artistic career

Carol Welsman attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston from 1980 to 1983, majoring in piano, and studied singing privately with Christiane Legrand in Europe. After returning to Toronto in 1990, she taught jazz at the University of Toronto , gave private lessons and founded a vocal ensemble for jazz improvisation.

Since then she has taught at Canadian and US colleges and universities. In 1995 she released her debut album Lucky to be me with jazz standards and her own composition "This Lullaby". She presented the song to a wide audience in the Larry King show commemorating the events of September 11th, which aired in 2004. “This Lullaby” was also sung by Celine Dion in 2004 on her CD Miracle under the title “Baby, Close Your Eyes”.

Welsman also wrote lyrics for several singers, such as Ray Charles and Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls . Together with Herbie Hancock , she hosted the Billboard Jazz Awards in 2000 . Her 2009 CD, "I Like Men" - Reflections of Miss Peggy Lee , was named one of the top 5 albums of 2009 in USA Today .

In 2010 she appeared on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz radio show.

Her mother tongue is English and most of her songs are in English; but she also sings and teaches in French and sings several songs in Portuguese.
