The Carolaturm is a lookout tower in Koblenz . It stands on a steep slope facing the Moselle in the Lay district and offers a view of the Moselle valley and Winningen . The tower is a monument for the tourist development and the instrumentalization of the landscape .

history

The Carolaturm was built between 1895 and 1896 on the initiative of the “Coblenz Beautification Association” according to plans by the Koblenz city building councilor Friedrich Wilhelm Maeckler . The observation tower was named after the wife of the then mayor Emil Schüller . After the establishment of the Layer footpath forest and were here Turnfeste , in the era of National Socialism and sentiments festivals held. It was renovated in 1922, 1962, 1980 and 2006.

construction

The single-storey, approx. 7 m high tower was built from slate rubble on a 5/8 floor plan. Its construction with buttresses and battlements gives the observation tower a medieval look. Buttresses and pinnacles are with keystones of basalt covered. The year 1895 is written in the keystone above the entrance. The interior, which is at ground level from the entrance side, with its four pointed arched windows serves as a viewing platform and has a cell vault .

Monument protection

The Carolaturm is a protected cultural monument according to the Monument Protection Act (DSchG) and registered in the list of monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . It stands in Koblenz-Lay south of the village, on the steep slope facing the Moselle .
