The Subway 400 was the second race of the season in the NASCAR Nextel Cup until 2004 , held a week after the Daytona 500 . It took place at North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham , North Carolina .
It was held for the first time in 1966. Until 1985 it was a 500 mile race and was called the Carolina 500, so it had no main sponsor. From 1986 to 1995 it was called “Goodwrench Service 400”. It was then shortened to 400 miles. In 2002, the Subway fast-food restaurant became a sponsor of the race.
Up until the 2004 season, two races were held at North Carolina Speedway. After the 2003 season, the fall race, the Pop Secret Microwave Popcorn 400 , was transferred to California Speedway for Labor Day . This postponed the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway into November before being completely removed from the racing calendar in 2005.
The Subway 400 of 2004 had one of the closest finishes in NASCAR history. Rookie Kasey Kahne won the second race of his career by 0.010 seconds over Matt Kenseth .
