Caroline Countess von Holnstein from Bavaria (born Freiin von Spiering ; * May 8, 1815 in Fronberg / Schwandorf , † July 24, 1859 in Fronberg / Schwandorf) was a Bavarian nobleman. Her portrait , painted by Joseph Stieler , is one of the most famous of the 36  portrait paintings in the beauty gallery of King Ludwig I in Nymphenburg Palace .

Life

Caroline Maximiliana Maria Freiin von Spiering was born on May 8, 1815 in Fronberg Castle . She was the fifth child of Carl Theodor Freiherr von Spiering and his wife Johanna Nepumukena, nee Freiin von Enzberg. According to a popular rumor, however, her birth father is said to have been Karl von Bayern , the brother of the Bavarian Crown Prince.

Marriage to Count Holnstein from Bavaria

After his father's death in 1829, the search for a suitable husband began. On November 9, 1831, at the age of 16, she married the Bavarian landowner and royal treasurer Karl Theodor Graf Holnstein (1797–1857), who was 18 years her senior . The desire to merge the property of the Spiering and von Holnstein families spoke in favor of this marriage. In Munich, where the couple lived, her husband's position opened many doors at court. On December 8, 1833, the beautiful Countess King Ludwig I was first noticed at a court academy. It quickly became one of the swarmed centers of court society; the king had it painted for his gallery of beauties in 1834 and he insisted on taking it on one of the courtly sleigh rides through Munich on December 29, 1835.

Her son Maximilian Karl Theodor von Holnstein, born in 1835, came from her marriage to Count Holnstein . This was a playmate of Princes Ludwig and Otto (both later Kings of Bavaria). This friendship continued even after Ludwig ascended the throne as King of Bavaria. Max von Holnstein brought Ludwig's " Kaiserbrief " to Otto von Bismarck .

Relationship with Baron von Künsberg

The noble way of life bored Caroline, however. Caroline fell in love with Freiherr Wilhelm von Künsberg at one of the numerous nobility festivals . The married Künsberg returned the feelings, which from then on were secretly exchanged. When Künsberg's wife died in 1836, Caroline left her husband and moved to her castle in Fronberg with her lover. Because of his love, Künsberg had to take off his cuirassier uniform. Her husband, Karl Theodor Graf von Holnstein from Bavaria, however, tolerated his wife's relationship and refused a divorce. This even went so far that his wife's legitimate and illegitimate children were brought up together. Only after Count Holnstein's death was the path to the altar clear. On September 21, 1857 they said yes in the pilgrimage church on the Kreuzberg in Schwandorf .

The illegitimate children of Carolines and Wilhelm von Künsberg were subsequently legitimized and accepted into the Bavarian baron class on July 7, 1859 under the name of Künsberg Freiherr von Fronberg . The mother was still able to experience this legitimation. Caroline died a little later on July 24, 1859 in her castle in Fronberg and was buried there. The sarcophagus with its remains is in an adjoining room to the castle chapel.
