Carolyn Tanner Irish

Carolyn Tanner Irish (* 14. April 1940 in Salt Lake City , Utah as Carolyn Tanner ) is a bishop of the Episcopal Church .

Life

Irish, a daughter of professor and entrepreneur Obert Clark Tanner, was raised in a family belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . She was baptized in this church but had no contact with her as a young adult. She graduated from Stanford University , the University of Michigan and the University of Oxford with a Master of Letters degree in 1968 . She did not join the Episcopal Church until 1975 and began studying Anglican theology at the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1979 , completing it in 1983 with a Master of Divinity . In the same year she was ordained a deacon and in 1984 a priestess . After working in Washington, DC, Virginia and Michigan, Irish was Bishop of the Diocese of Utah of the Episcopal Church of the United States from 1996 to 2010.

From 1960 to 1988 she was married to Leon E. Irish. She has been married to Frederick Quinn since 2001.
