Carpinus pubescens is a medium-sized tree from the genus of hornbeams ( Carpinus ) with dark brown, sparsely shaggy hairy or balding branches and leaves with a bare top and shaggy hairy underside along the veins. The natural range of the species is in China and Vietnam.
description
Carpinus pubescens is a tree up to 17 meters high with brownish-gray bark . The twigs are dark brown, sparsely shaggy or hairy. The leaves have a 4 to 15 millimeter long, sparsely downy-haired or almost bare stalk. The leaf blade is 5 to 10 centimeters long and 2 to 3.5 centimeters wide, oblong, oblong-lanceolate, ovate-lanceolate or ovate-elliptical, rarely elliptical or ovoid, pointed or rarely pointed, with more or less rounded-wedge-shaped, rounded or heart-shaped sometimes oblique base and a regularly double finely serrated leaf margin. Twelve to 14 pairs of nerves are formed. The upper side of the leaf is bare, the underside has sparsely shaggy hair along the leaf veins and has axillary whiskers.
The female inflorescences are 5 to 7 inches long with a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters. The inflorescence axis is 2 to 3 centimeters long, sparsely shaggy hairy or bald. The bracts are 1 to 2.5 inches long, half-egg-shaped with a pointed or blunt end. The outer leaf margin is irregularly serrated without a basal lobe, the inner part has entire margins, straight or almost sickle-shaped, with a rolled-up basal auricle . The leaves have five first-order veins and are sparsely shaggy hairy along the veins. The leaf veins arranged like a net are protruding. As fruits 3 to 4 millimeters long and 2 to 3 millimeters wide, broadly ovate significantly ribbed, densely pubescent and rarely balding, shaggy hairy at the top are Nüsschen formed with sparsely distributed resin glands. Carpinus pubescens flowers from May to June, the fruits ripen from July to September.
Occurrence and location requirements
The natural range is in the north of Vietnam, in the Chinese provinces of Guizhou and Shaanxi , in the south of Sichuan and in the east of Yunnan . The species grows on calcareous soils in valley forests and mountain thickets at an altitude of 450 to 2000 meters.
