Carreiras is a place and a former municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Portalegre . The community had 583 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

Finds prove a settlement of today's municipality area since the Neolithic Age . Not much is known about the origins of today's location. The earliest traces of today's settlement date from the Middle Ages. Presumably, the present place was created during the settlement policy after the conclusion of the Portuguese Reconquista . The parish church dates from the 16th century, since then Carreiras has existed as an independent parish.

On September 29, 2013, the municipalities of Carreiras and Ribeira de Nisa were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Ribeira de Nisa e Carreiras .

Culture and sights

The parish church Igreja Paroquial de Carreiras , also Igreja de São Sebastião after its patron saint of Saint Sebastian , is a listed building. Other architectural monuments of Carreira are a medieval pavement and a not yet fully excavated and classified find of a Neolithic settlement, the Povoado do Veloso .

Carreiras has a health center as a branch of the Portalegre Health Center, part of the national network of the Portuguese national health system, Serviço Nacional de Saúde .

The 120-member sports club Associação da Juventude Carreirens (German: Association of Carreiras Youth ) operates football, futsal , paintball , mountain biking , archery, camping, youth exchange events, and it participates in the organization of village festivals.
