Carteria is a genus of unicellular green algae from the group of Chlorophyceae . Some representatives grow on snow.
features
Carteria species are unicellular algae with four flagella. The cells are not or barely flattened; viewed from the side they are spherical, ovoid or elliptical. The cells are 8 to 40 micrometers long. They have a cell wall, the flagella are located on an apical papilla (not in all species). The individual chloroplast has different shapes: depending on the type, it is cup-shaped, H-shaped, or lies against one side. It can also be riddled with holes. The chloroplast usually has an eye spot and one or more pyrenoids . There are two or four contractile vacuoles in the cytoplasm .
Asexual reproduction occurs through the formation of 2 to 8 zoospores. Sexual reproduction occurs through isogamy, anisogamy, or oogamy .
Occurrence
Carteria occurs in the freshwater plankton of all types of water, including on earth and snow.
Systematics
The genus Carteria includes 24 recognized species according to Algaebase.
