Scherffelia is a genus of single-celled green algae from the class of Chlorophyceae . Some representatives grow on snow.

features

The representatives are unicellular algae with four flagella. The cells are flattened, in side view they appear oval-elliptical. They are surrounded by a thin theca, which is a cell wall made of fused scales. The flagella start in an apical flagellum pit. Each cell has two chloroplasts with no pyrenoids . Each chloroplast divides into two lobes in the front half. One of the four lobes has an eye patch . There are two contractile vacuoles near the flagellum pit .

Asexual reproduction occurs when the mother cell sheds the flagella and the cell divides into two or four zoospores within the theca . These each form their own theca and four flagella. Then the theca of the mother cell tears open and the zoospores are released. Sexual reproduction is unknown.

Occurrence

Scherffelia is found in sea, brackish and fresh water. It forms the plankton of cool lakes and shady ponds.

Systematics

The genus Scherffelia includes 8 recognized species according to Algaebase.
