Carvalhal do Sapo (often just Carvalhal ) is a central Portuguese village in the municipality ( Freguesia ) of Cadafaz e Colmeal , in the district ( concelho ) of Góis .
geography
The village is located above the main town of Colmeal , an independent municipality until 2013 , on a hill that continues to rise to 1029 meters behind the village. The village is located 30 km east of the district town of Góis.
history
The place was officially mentioned for the first time in the census of 1527, together with another place of the same name in the municipality. The village, usually only called Carvalhal , has been officially called Carvalhal do Sapo (English: oak grove of the frog) since the middle of the 20th century to distinguish it from that other Carvalhal. The responsible city administration ( Câmara Municipal ) of Góis selected the addition with reference to the frog-rich river Rio Ceira below the village.
economy
In the surrounding hills, electricity is partly generated in wind farms . Other economic activities are merely a snack bar with a café on site, and a baker who visits the site every day with a vending truck. Agriculture (vegetables, fruit, grain, some livestock farming) is mostly only practiced as a sideline. There is a primary school in town, the only public building.
Culture and sights
The village, in which there are some houses built in the region's traditional slate construction, is surrounded by green hills, and various springs provide water there. Located away from through streets or businesses of all kinds, the place is generally characterized by calm and clear air. In addition, the place, as the highest in the municipality, enjoys wide views.
Every year on the weekend closest to July 24th, the São João (Eng .: St. John the Baptist ) festival takes place here.
