history

Thermal baths and piazza in Casciana Terme

Earlier names of the place were Bagno ad Acqua and Bagni di Casciana (bath by the water or baths of Casciana). Around 800 the place was called Castrum ad Aquis . Until 1927, Casciana Terme was part of the municipality of Lari . Today's toponym with the addition of terme was chosen to distinguish it from the neighboring Casciana Alta (higher Casciana), a district of Lari. In the Middle Ages the community was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Pisa . The thermal baths were rediscovered in the 11th century by Mathilde von Canossa and have a constant temperature of 35.7 ° C. In 1362 the place was destroyed in the wars between Florence and Pisa and in 1515 it was completely taken over by Florence. In 1776 Casciana was assigned to the municipality of Lari and in 1927 it became an independent municipality. On January 1, 2014, the place was merged again with Lari to form the new municipality of Casciana Terme Lari.
