history

The Castello dei Vicari in the center of Lari

The center is the village of Lari, which can be traced back to Etruscan origins . Ceramic shards found in the underground of the local Castello attest to this for the period up to the 5th century BC. The place was first mentioned in a document in 732. At that time, the center of the place was a wooden tower surrounded by stilts.

In 1230 the site was expanded and strengthened into a fortress by the Upezzinghi , a rebellious family from Pisa . The fortress was expanded in a strategically important location and grew into one of the best protected castles in inner Tuscany .

With the conquest of Laris after a bloody battle in 1406, the rule of Pisa passed to Florence . Lari became a Florentine Vicariate, in which Vicars of Florence were installed and replaced every six months. Their tasks included tax collection, jurisdiction and command of the army. The vicariate at that time was extensive and stretched to the sea, controlled properties in Peccioli , Palaia , and in the north parts of Pontedera .

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the defenses were reinforced on all sides: access was restricted to three gates, two of which have been preserved today. The Volterra Gate (Porta Volterrana) in the south was the main entrance with a drawbridge that led over a dry moat. This was torn down as early as 1780 to enable carts to access the market in the central piazza. The two side gates Porta Fiorentina and Porta Maremmana are still there today.

The vicariate existed until 1848. After that, the Lari Castle was the seat of the local court for more than 100 years.

Today Lari is a quiet place with a historical atmosphere. The cultivation of cherries and the "smallest noodle factory in the world" according to the Martelli brothers are of some economic importance.

On January 1, 2014, the municipality merged with Casciana Terme to form the new municipality of Casciana Terme Lari . In Lari, Lari voted 76.93% for the union with a 34.02% turnout. The town hall seat remained in Lari. Until the amalgamation of the municipalities, the districts of Casciana Alta , Cevoli , Lavaiano , Perignano , San Ruffino and Usigliano belonged to the municipality of Lari, after which they moved with Lari to the new municipality.
