Casimira Rodríguez

Casimira Rodríguez Romero (* 1966 in Mizque , Department Cochabamba ) is a Bolivian trade unionist and politician . She was Bolivian Minister of Justice from 2006 to 2007 .

Life

At 13, Casimira was brought from her small Quechua village to the city of Cochabamba and had to do unpaid housework for nearly two decades. Later, she was instrumental in building the union Federación Nacional de Trabajadoras del Hogar (National Federation of Domestic Workers of Bolivia, FENATRAHOB), of which she was the first chairman and which was able to enforce a law to improve the situation of domestic workers in 2003. In 2001 she was also elected General Secretary of the Association of Domestic Workers in Latin America and the Caribbean , which comprises 14 unions. In addition, she attended an evening grammar school and began studying anthropology at the Universidad Católica Boliviana, which was interrupted by her appointment to the government .

Casimira Rodríguez is a member of the Methodist Evangelical Church of Bolivia and of Evo Morales' Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) party . As a young woman she took part in the work of the Christian Peace Conference , at the VI. All-Christian peace meeting she attended in 1985 in Prague . In February 2006 she became the first Quechua woman minister in Bolivia. Due to ongoing hostility and discrimination on the part of the judiciary, she resigned from her position in January 2007.

She is currently Minister of Social Affairs in the Department of Cochabamba and at the turn of the year published her 500-page autobiography "Camila" in the local Khipus Verlag.

Honors

Casimira Rodríguez was awarded the Methodist Peace Prize in 2003.
