Caspar Erasmus Duftschmid
Caspar Erasmus Duftschmid (born November 19, 1767 in Gmunden , Upper Austria , † December 17, 1821 in Linz ) was an Austrian doctor and naturalist (botany and entomology ).
Duftschmid made significant discoveries in the field of entomology , especially coleopterology (beetle science), and acquired the complete insect collection from Johann Ignaz Schiffermüller for the Vienna Natural History Museum . His herbarium is in the Upper Austrian State Museum in Linz. The entomological collection also came to the Upper Austrian State Museum after a few detours. The old original labels were destroyed later, so that the Duftschmid types can no longer be found in the museum collection today.
In his three-volume work Fauna Austriæ he introduced many new genera and species .
Duftschmid was the father of the botanist and doctor Johann Baptiste Duftschmid (1804–1866). He is also the ancestor of the musician Lorenz Duftschmid (* 1964).
