Michael Forcher (born November 3, 1941 in Lienz ) is an Austrian historian , publisher and publicist .

Life

After graduating from high school in Lienz in 1959, he began studying Latin and history in Vienna, which he continued in Innsbruck from 1961 (history with numerous minor subjects, especially art history , archeology , philosophy ). He did his dissertation in Austrian history on "The secret state police in the pre- March Tyrol and Vorarlberg", in 1966 he received his doctorate in philosophy .

During his studies he also began to work. a. as an editorial candidate for the weekly newspaper “ Der Volksbote ” (present since 1969), and gave lectures within the framework of the Catholic Educational Institute (especially topics relating to geography and contemporary history).

Forcher switched to the Innsbruck diocese in 1970 with the task of establishing and managing a press office. He was also active in adult education. In 1975 the then editor-in-chief brought Hubert Feichtlbauer Forcher to the Innsbruck editorial office of the Kurier . He operated daily newspaper journalism and wrote series in the style of magazine journalism. 1978–1982 Forcher worked as a freelance journalist and was also a lecturer in adult education and a book author. In 1982 he founded the Haymon Verlag . From 1985 to 1988, in addition to his publishing work, he had a half-day job as a dramaturge at the Tyrolean State Theater . In addition, until 2005 he took on several teaching assignments at the University of Innsbruck on publishing and literary proofreading.

With the Haymon-Verlag things went up organically, 5 books in 1983 became 25 new publications in 1993 and thereafter an average of 22 to 24 new publications per year. At first his only employee was his wife, then he employed one or two employees for a long time. From 1991, the team (including the publisher couple) consisted of five to six people. In terms of content, the publishing house developed from a regional non-fiction book publisher ( Tirolensien ) to an international literary publisher. In 2000 he sold half of the publishing house to the Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt (DVA) in order to inject capital and improve the market situation in Germany. The publishing house remained independent in terms of content and organization.

In 2001 he was honored with the Cross of Merit of the State of Tyrol . In 2004 he received the cultural honorary symbol from the city of Innsbruck.

In 2003 he was looking for a new partner in order to avoid disadvantages for the publisher due to the imminent sale of DVA. The half that previously belonged to the DVA was taken over by Markus Hatzer or his Innsbruck-based study publisher . In 2005, the Studienverlag also took over the 50 percent of the publisher that had been held by Michael Forcher up to that point. As the publisher, Forcher remained solely responsible for the program. In the course of 2006, program management was smoothly handed over to Matthias Part.

On December 31, 2006, Michael Forcher resigned from the management of the publishing house and retired, but remained with the publishing house as editor and for special tasks. He has also tackled various book projects as a freelance author, including the history of the Tyrolean riflemen .
