Lorenz Duftschmid

Lorenz Duftschmid (* 1964 in Linz ) is an Austrian gambist and conductor in the field of historical performance practice .

Life

Born into a musical family, Lorenz Duftschmid began his musical training at an early age. He did his graduation at the Music School Linz and studied at the Bruckner Conservatory in his hometown. During his student days he founded the early music ensembles “Ars Antiqua” and “Consortium Musicum”. Lorenz Duftschmid then studied in Jordi Savall's viol class at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis . In the meantime he had musical contacts with August Wenzinger , Wieland Kuijken , Charles Medlam , Gustav Leonhardt , Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini and the Austrian music historian, organist, organ builder and Nestor of the historical performance practice Josef Mertin (1904–1998) during master classes or joint projects .

Many years followed his studies in which Duftschmid gave concerts with ensembles and conductors in many countries around the world. These included Ton Koopman with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra , Jordi Savall with Hesperion XXI and the "La Capella Reial de Catalunya", Claudio Abbado , Michael Gielen , Rolf Lislevand , Andrew Lawrence-King , Fabio Biondi with "L'Europa Galante", Rinaldo Alessandrini , Bob van Asperen , Christophe Coin , Derek Lee Ragin, Carlos Mena, Lee Santana , Andreas Staier , Andrea Marcon , Trevor Pinnock , the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra , the Vienna Symphony , the Berlin Philharmonic , Sir John Eliot Gardiner and others. Numerous CD recordings document these musical encounters.

Duftschmid is the director of the Austrian ensemble “Armonico Tributo Austria”, with whom he also made numerous recordings. Since 2004 he has been a lecturer for viol at the University of Art in Graz . In the same year he was a co-founder of the sheet music and CD publisher "AnLeut". He teaches viol at the Trossingen University of Music and in 2009 took over the management of the Institute for Early Music at this university.

Lorenz Duftschmid is the direct descendant of the Austrian doctor and naturalist Caspar Erasmus Duftschmid (1767–1821) and of Dr. Johann Baptiste Duftschmid (1804–1866).

Lorenz Duftschmid lives with his family in Biengen .
