Castanopsis brevispinula is a species of tree fromthe beech family (Fagaceae) that occurs in Southeast Asia.

features

Castanopsis brevispinula is a tree . The leaves are blunt at the base and tip.

The fruit cups (cupulae) are studded with simple spikes . The spines are straight, close together and completely cover the surface of the fruit cup. The fruit cups, including the spines, are a maximum of four centimeters in diameter, usually 2.5 to 4 centimeters. Each fruit cup contains only three, rarely two nuts, two thirds to three quarters of which it encloses.

The nut is wider than it is long and flattened at the top and the base.

Flowering time is from March to June, the fruit ripens from March to November.

Distribution and locations

The species occurs in Thailand and Laos . It grows in deeper evergreen mountain forests and oak - pine forests at around 650 to 1600 m above sea level, mostly 1000 to 1400 m.
