Castanopsis inermis is a tree . The leaves are obovate to oblong.

The fruit cups (cupulae) are spherical and have simple spikes. The spines are curved, not close together, so that the surface of the fruit cup is easily visible. The spines are regularly in crossed lines.

The nuts are formed individually or up to four, they are egg-shaped or flattened on one long side or even dented. hairy.

Flowering time is January to November, mostly from January to March. The fruit ripens from June to December, mostly from June to August.

Distribution and locations

The species occurs in Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Indonesia. It grows in the evergreen lowland rainforest, often on rivers on granite or sandstone subsoil. It occurs at altitudes of 80 to 200 m, but mostly below 100 m.
