Castanopsis tribuloides is a species of tree fromthe beech family (Fagaceae) that occurs in Southeast Asia. The nuts are edible. The species can be used as a pioneer wood for reforestation.

Castanopsis tribuloides is a tree . The leaves are lanceolate to oblong.

The fruit cups (cupulae) are ellipsoidal , more rarely egg-shaped, and decorated with simple spines. The spines are curved, not close together, so that the surface of the fruit cup is easily visible. The spines are regularly in curved lines.

The nuts are formed individually or up to four, they are egg-shaped or flattened on one long side or even dented. hairy.

Flowering time is January to November, mostly from May to June. The fruit ripens from March to November, mostly from June to September.

Distribution and locations

The species occurs in Thailand, India, Nepal, Myanmar, China, Laos and Vietnam. It grows in deeper mountain forests, in oak - pine forests and deciduous forests on granite or sandstone subsoil. It occurs at altitudes of 600 to 1700 m, mostly 100 to 1300 m.
