Castel 19637

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Castel 19637 is a red grape variety that was bred by Pierre Castel . Since the crossing of Cinsault and Vitis rupestris was based on original American vines, it is a hybrid (also known as an interspecific crossing).

The early ripening variety was widespread in France, particularly in the Gers and Loir-et-Cher departments and in Burgundy . Due to the EU-wide ban on the commercial use of hybrid vines, the variety is practically no longer known in the EU.

Today the grape variety is still in use in Canada .

Castel 19637 produces high-alcohol, deep dark red wines that are mostly used in blends with other types.

Due to its early budding, Castel is at great risk of late frost in 19637. See also the articles Viticulture in France and Viticulture in Canada and the list of grape varieties .
