The Castello Orsini is the ruin of a hilltop castle at the foot of Monte Velino near the medieval settlement Albe Vecchia in the Italian municipality of Massa d'Albe in the province of L'Aquila .

history

Castle walls

The castle ruins are located near the excavation site with the remains of the Aequersiedlung Alba Fucens , after the second Samnite war in the 4th century BC. A Roman Colonia , and the later, medieval settlement of Albe , which was almost completely destroyed by the Avezzano earthquake in 1915 .

The castle, in a strategic place to control the original route of the Via Tiburtina had been built, rebuilt by the Count of Albe, only to 1268 by the troops of Charles I of Naples , the victor of the Battle of Tagliacozzo destroyed to become.

From 1372 the castle was rebuilt by the Orsinis after conquering the county of Albe, but was badly damaged in the Avezzano earthquake in 1915.

During the Second World War , the German headquarters for supplies via the Gustav Line and the Caesar Line was housed in the castle .

The castle ruins have a rectangular floor plan. From the city walls , three pages are received, except for the eastern. Two large round towers with wall feet can be found at the northeast and southeast corner, while the remains of a tower with a square floor plan can be found at the northwest corner.

The entrance portal has a pointed arch , which suggests that the castle was built in the 14th century, although the addition of an outer wall base testifies to the reconstruction from the 15th century.
