Castello di Lierna is a castle in Lierna (Italy) on a peninsula in Lake Como .

history

The origins of the castle go back to Roman times. From 588 to 616 it was the residence of the Lombard queen Theudelinde . The Castello was the site of fighting between Milan and Como in 1124.

In 1532 the castle, which the condottiere Gian Giacomo Medici had expanded into a naval fortress, was taken by troops from Graubünden after lengthy fighting. This ended its importance as a military base, and the complex became a purely residential and commercial settlement.

Inside the castle there is a small chapel, the Chiesa dei Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro . The church was first mentioned in written sources in 1147. It underwent some changes until the 17th century. The frescoes on the front of the chapel date from the 18th century and depict the church patrons Maurizius and Lazarus as warriors. Other frescoes have been preserved on the south wall of the nave, including a. Fragments of a representation of St.  Sebastian . The pala of the baroque altar is the work of an unknown artist. Jesus , Mary and Martha are depicted .

On January 22, 1573, Emanuel Philibert of Savoy renewed the Knightly Order of St. Mauritius and Lazarus after Pope Gregory XIII. the Ordre de Saint-Lazare de Jérusalem and the Savoese Order of Saint Maurizius had combined into one order. The order still exists today.

The patron saint of the church is September 22nd, the day of St. Maurice.

Castello di Lierna in the film

The Castello was the setting for a film adaptation of the novel I Promessi Sposi (1967) by Alessandro Manzoni , directed by Sandro Bolchi .
