Castello di Tornano

The Castello di Tornano is an early medieval castle near Gaiole in Chianti in the province of Siena in the Italian region of Tuscany . The fort is located on a hill and can be reached via a gravel road.

geography

The castle is located in the Chianti countryside , approx. 5 km southwest of Gaiole in Chianti, approx. 13 km northeast of the provincial capital Siena and approx. 40 km south of the regional capital Florence . The Torrente Marsellone (today Massellone , 12 km long) flows to the west and serves as a left tributary about 1.5 km further south of the Arbia .

history

The castle was the seat of a Curtis around the year 1000. Their name often appears in contracts that were kept in the Coltibuono Abbey . Later the castle belonged to the nobleman Guarnellotto de 'Mezzolombardi from Siena. Since he rebelled against the emperor Barbarossa , Tornano was withdrawn from him in 1167. The emperor gave the property to Ranieri de 'Firidolfi Ricasoli, but Guarnellotto, supported by Siena, kept control of Tornano and the nearby Campi Castle. Only when the area around Tornano came to Florence was Tornano finally withdrawn from the Guarnallotto after the arbitration ruling by Poggibonsi on June 4, 1203. In 1229, Siena was able to recapture Tornano, but in 1235 it finally lost control of Tornano.

Around 1400 the castle was redesigned by the Ricasoli family and provided with new fortifications. The castle was able to withstand two attacks by the Aragonese in the 15th century. In 1530 the castle was conquered by the imperial troops.

investment

Today the historical complex consists mainly of a trapezoid tower that was raised recently and the remains of the former castle walls and the moat. The castle chapel has also been preserved, but has been converted into a wine cellar. The castle, now in ruins, was renovated by Manfredo and Silvana Selvolini in the 1970s and expanded into a hotel complex.
