The Catahoula Bulldog is a hybrid dog from the United States. He is not a dog breed in the strict sense and is therefore not recognized by any of the major cynological organizations.
Origin and history
The Catahoula Bulldog is a cross between the American Bulldog and the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog . Howard Carnathan started breeding in the late 19th century. He wrote a letter in 1960 to Mr. Stodghill, the director of the Animal Research Foundation, with information about the breed: “I needed a dog that would be a companion and protector to my children at home yet also was in need of a dog that would help with the farming duties. The mixture of the Catahoula Bulldog fit my purpose exactly. ”(I needed a dog who would be our companion and protector for my children and our house and who would help me in agriculture. The Catahoula Bulldog mixture was exactly what I wanted.)
In the USA, the country of origin, the Catahoula Bulldog is quite common; it is hardly known in Europe.
description
The shoulder height for males is given as 55 to 66 cm, for bitches it varies between 51 and 61 cm. It is more important that the dogs have a maximum amount of substance in relation to their size, i. H. a harmonious relationship between height and weight. The weight of a bitch is 25–40 kg, that of a male 28–45 kg. In terms of physique, it is similar to the American Staffordshire Terrier or American Pit Bull Terrier .
The fur is very short and smooth, in the colors white, blue, merle , brown, tricolor (black with white and brown markings), white with gray, black with spots or brindle. The ears, sometimes docked in their homeland, have different variations of the rose ear. The eyes are usually light to dark brown, ice blue, light blue, green, gold, two different eye colors are not uncommon.
breed
The Catahoula Bulldog is not a breed but a hybrid dog. There is therefore no pure breeding; Catahoula Bulldogs can only be bred by continually crossing the original breeds.
The first Catahoula Bulldog was a 50/50 cross between Catahoula Leopard Dog and American Bulldog, today it is crossed up to 75/25, it is considered desirable that the limit at 75/25 be respected in order to maintain the basic characteristics of the two breeds do not get lost.
The Catahoula Bulldog is recognized by the Animal Research Foundation (ARF) in the United States. The ARF also issues pedigrees and papers for Catahoula Bulldogs, but only if the 50/50 crossing is complied with, everything else is not permitted.
health
The Catahoula Bulldog is a fairly healthy dog. In some cases, Catahoula Bulldogs may be hard of hearing or deaf. This is mostly due to the fact that Merle x Merle are mated without permission ( Merle factor ). Deaf and hard of hearing dogs are excluded from breeding.
Before breeding, the parent animals must be x-rayed for the dog's hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia . Reputable breeders of Catahoula Bulldogs let their pups check for hereditary eye diseases such as: B. Collie Eye Anomaly CEA, cataracts , pupillary membrane MPP, distichiasis, retinal dysplasia RD, lens luxation and progressive retinal atrophy PRA test and carry out an audiometric examination or a hearing test - as with dalmatians. A hearing and eye test must be carried out, especially in puppies with a lot of white.
Racial Issues
The Catahoula Bulldog is indirectly assigned to the breed list , category 2 in three German federal states ( Bavaria , Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia ) because it is a cross with the participation of the American Bulldog, which is listed as a listed dog in these countries ; therefore the respective regulations must be observed.
In the Swiss canton of Ticino , the keeping of the Catahoula Bulldog as a crossbreed with the participation of the American Bulldog also requires a permit.
In Denmark the Catahoula Bulldog is banned for the same reason. The import is also prohibited for tourists if the dog was purchased after July 1st, 2010.
