Catengue is a small town in Angola . A special aloe plant is native here, the aloe catengiana named after the place .

history

Catengue was the scene of operations several times during the Angolan Civil War (1975-2002) after the country gained independence from Portugal . In Operation Carlota , which was carried out before Angola's independence in 1975 , the troops of the later ruling party MPLA suffered a defeat here in 1975 by the invading South African army .

administration

Catengue is the seat of a municipality of the same name (Comuna) in the district ( Município ) of Caimbambo in the province of Benguela .

traffic

Catengue is located on the historic Benguela Railway , which connects the small town with the provincial capital Benguela and the port city of Lobito , as well as with Huambo , the second largest city of Angola, and with Luau , where the route leads to the territory of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and into the connection of the Société National des Chemins de fer du Congo passes.

economy

The community is characterized by agriculture, especially cattle breeding.

As part of the reconstruction programs, the provincial government built some new buildings in the municipality and in October 2013 agricultural machines were distributed on preferential terms as part of the state's efforts to combat hunger and poverty. However, cattle breeders in the municipality of Catengue complained to the provincial government about the lack of support for them in the drought from which the region continues to suffer. In order to supply the 35,000 cattle and 11,000 goats in Catengue, the breeders have meanwhile rented tankers to bring in water.
