The Cathedral Mountain is a mountain in the center of the Australian state of Tasmania . It is located on the eastern edge of the Cradle Mountain Lake St. Clair National Park .

Details

Cathedral Mountain is 1,387 m high. Its west flank is a spectacular rock face that plunges about 700 m into the valley of the Mersey River .

The network coordinates in the UTM coordinate system are 261622 UTM Zone 55G and a high-resolution topographic map (1: 25,000) is available from Tasmap (Cathedral (No. 4236)).

To the west is Mount Ossa , Tasmania's highest mountain, to the north is Mount Pillinger , to the east is Mount Ragoona and to the south is Castle Crag in the Du Cane Range . At the foot of the western falls is the upper reaches of the Mersey River. The Overland Track passes 2 km from the south face.

Most of the landmarks near Cathedral Mountain have names reminiscent of the church, such as: B. Chalice Lake, Chapter Lake, Cloister Lagoon, Convent Hill, Bishop Peak, Curate Bluff, Vicar Bluff, and Dean Bluff .

In the last 30 years, a large part of the summit structure has broken off and fell hundreds of meters deeper into the rainforest . This wiped out the rainforest and instead you will find a huge pile of rubble that almost reaches the banks of the Mersey River. The resulting break-off point is still visible from many kilometers away.

Access

In the hiking season (from November to April), the West Abbrbruch can mainly be reached via the Overland Track from Cradle Mountain . During this time there are booking fees, the number of hikers on the Overland Track is limited and it can only be walked from north to south. Outside the season, the path can also be walked from south to north. A combination of the Arm River Track and the Innes Track also leads to the mountain, as does the Lees Paddocks Track . There is also a connection from the neighboring Vicar Bluff to Kia Ora . These alternative routes create connections to the Overland Track.

The easiest climb is from the south end of Mersey Forrest Road on the east bank of Lake Rowallan via the Moses Creek Track . Then it's on to Chapter Lake , Grail Falls , Chalice Lake and Tent Tarn . From there it is another 2 km to the summit through pathless terrain. Sometimes you see some stone men.
