Catherine "Cathy" Mary Bakewell, Baroness Bakewell of Hardington Mandeville , MBE (born March 7, 1949 in Bristol ) is a British politician of the Liberal Democrats . Since September 2013 she has been a Life Peeress member of the House of Lords .

Life

Bakewell was born in Bristol, badly damaged by German air raids ; her father fought as a soldier in World War II . Bakewell first came into contact with politics in the early 1980s. In 1983 she became secretary to Paddy Ashdown , then MP of the House of Commons for the constituency of Yeovil .

She began her own political career in local politics . In May 1993 she was elected as a councilor (Councilor) in Somerset County Council , the county council of Somerset . Her political priorities in the county council included: the deployment of fire and rescue workers , police measures , gender equality policy , child protection , further and advanced training and adult education . In 2001 Bakewell became Leader of the County of Somerset County Council; she held this office until May 2007. In May 2009 she was elected in a by-election to the South Somerset District Council, the district council (district council) of South Somerset. There she represented the constituency of Coker . She was re-elected in May 2011. In May 2013, she resigned from Somerset County Council.

In 2007 she was a member of the Councilors Commission, a commission initiated by Secretary of State Ruth Kelly to promote access to UK councils for people of different social and professional backgrounds. She is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Leadership Center for Local Government .

On August 1, 2013 it was announced that Bakewell will be named a Life Peer and a member of the House of Lords for the Liberal Democrats. She was appointed as a so-called “working peer”. On September 9, 2013, she was raised to Life Peeress with the title Baroness Bakewell of Hardington Mandeville , of Hardington Mandeville in the County of Somerset, and has been a member of the House of Lords since then. The title's territorial dedication, Hardington Mandeville, relates to her place of residence. On October 15, 2013, after Doreen Lawrence, Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon , with the assistance of Lord Ashdown of Norton-sub-Hamdon and Sal Brinton, Baroness Brinton , she was officially introduced to the House of Lords. She gave her inaugural address on October 31, 2013 in a debate on housing policy .
