Jean Catherine Coulter (born December 26, 1942 in Cameron County , Texas ) is an American writer. Coulter is a prolific and successful writer of romance novels and crime thrillers. 66 of her 70 novels to date appear on the New York Times bestseller lists . Large parts of her work - especially her romance novels - are classified as trivial literature.

life and work

Coulter grew up on a horse farm in Cameron County, received an undergraduate degree from the University of Texas and a Masters degree from Boston College in "Early 19th Century European History". She married Anton Pogany, who was studying medicine at the time and later became a doctor, and took a job as a speechwriter for a Wall Street company, which she was able to give up in 1982 when her writing was making enough money.

In 1979 Coulter published her first novel with the New York NAL publishing house: The Autumn Countess (German 1997: dungeon of the heart ). The plot of the romance novel, which was influenced by reading Georgette Heyer , was set in the British Regency (1811–1820), that is, in the period that Jane Austen had portrayed in an exemplary manner a good 160 years earlier. By 2011, another 27 Regency romance novels followed. She later revised and expanded many of the earlier Regency novels. In 1982 and 1985 Coulter published two romance novels ("Devil's Duology"), which are set around the turn of the 19th century in the milieu of the Mediterranean sea and in the oriental harem milieu. In 1983 she started a "Song" series of romance novels, the framework of which was the European Middle Ages. In 1984 a "Star" tetralogy followed, set in San Francisco around the middle of the 19th century. In 1991 she started a Viking tetralogy. Most of the novels that Coulter published up to 1996 can be classified as typical Bodice Ripper novels, that is, romance novels with villain heroes who subjugate their reluctant lovers by means of sexual violence. Coulter has contributed more works to this subgenre than most other female authors.

1985 Coulter published Aftershocks for the first time, a contemporary romance novel. Others followed. Through an intermediate stage from romantic thrillers ( False Pretenses , 1988; her first hardcover), Coulter finally came to FBI thrillers ( The Cove , 1996). Her second FBI thriller, The Maze (1997), was her first book to appear in hardcover rather than paperback on the New York Times bestseller list. In 2015, Coulter presented a novel with a paranormal theme for the first time .

Coulter lives in Mill Valley and Sausalito , California with her husband .
