Catherine O'Regan

Catherine Mary Elizabeth "Kate" O'Regan (born  September 17, 1957 in Liverpool ) is a South African lawyer . She served as a judge at the Constitutional Court of the Republic of South Africa from 1994 to 2009 and has been a judge at the Administrative Court of the International Monetary Fund since 2010 .

Life

Catherine O'Regan was born in the English city ​​of Liverpool in 1957 and has lived in her native South Africa since 1965, where she grew up in Cape Town . At the university there she obtained a BA degree in 1987 and a Bachelor of Laws two years later . In addition, it acquired in 1981 at the University of Sydney a Master of Laws and in 1988 at the London School of Economics the Promotion . From 1982 to 1985 she practiced as a lawyer in Johannesburg , particularly in the areas of labor and real estate law .

After her doctorate, she worked as a research assistant from 1988/1989, from 1990 to 1992 as a lecturer and from 1992 to 1994 as professor at the law faculty of the University of Cape Town. In 1994, at the age of 37, she was appointed as a judge at the newly established Constitutional Court of the Republic of South Africa , where she worked until 2009 and thus for the maximum possible term of 15 years. She has been a judge at the Administrative Court of the International Monetary Fund since 2010, and has also been the President of the Court since 2011.

She also holds an honorary professorship at the University of Cape Town and a visiting professorship at the University of Oxford . By Hifikepunye Pohamba , President of Namibia , she was also appointed for the period from February 2012 to January 2013 a judge of the Supreme Court of the country.

Awards

Catherine O'Regan has been an Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2009 . The University of KwaZulu-Natal (2001) and the University of Cape Town (2004) awarded her an honorary doctorate . In 2016 she was elected an honorary member of the British Academy .
