Catocala conjuncta is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

features

The moths of Catocala conjuncta reach a wingspan of 58 to 66 millimeters. The forewings are colored in different shades of brown, which means that when the wings are folded like a roof they hardly stand out from the tree bark on which they prefer to rest. The species belongs to the medium-sized ribbon types. The similar large oak carmine ( Catocala sponsa ) is significantly larger, from the approximately equally large small oak carmine ( Catocala promissa ), Catocala conjuncta differs in the less strongly jagged line near the outer edge of the forewings. The hind wings are red and have two black bands, a narrow one in the middle and a broad one on the outer edge.

The caterpillars are bark-colored gray-brown with fine black dots. They have two poorly developed, brown stripes on the back with small, reddish warts on them.

The pupa measures 26 mm in length and has a maximum diameter of 7.2 mm (females from southeastern Spain). It is light ocher brown and frosted. There is no actual, detached cremaster . Instead, the end of the abdomen is broadly rounded when viewed from above (or below), but rather pointed when viewed from the side. The area, which roughly corresponds to the Kremaster, is relatively densely populated with around ten medium-thick longitudinal ribs on the back side at the base. The ventral side is sculpted rather irregularly and a little deepened in the middle of the base. The absolute end of the abdomen is covered with eight curved bristles from the dorsal to the side.

Geographical distribution and habitat

In Catocala conjuncta is about a Mediterranean common species whose northernmost occurrence, the lake area is. Occasionally, butterflies fly away to South Tyrol , East Tyrol or even further north. The extreme location in this regard was the Minsmere RSPB reserve in England in 2004 . The species is also found in Asia Minor and North Africa . It prefers forest areas with holm oaks.

Way of life

The moths fly from July to September. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of oaks ( Quercus ), especially those of the holm oak ( Quercus ilex ). The moths drink using their proboscis sometimes tree sap and can use a bait are attracted.

Danger

The species is not native to Germany , which is why it is not classified on the Red List of endangered species . In Austria the species was caught only once in East Tyrol as an errant. Therefore there is no classification of the species in the Red Lists of Austria.
