Catoptria conchella is a butterfly from the family of the common borer (Crambidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 22 to 28 millimeters. The antennae of the males are toothed and ciliate very short, those of the females are thread-shaped. The thorax is white and yellowish on the back sides. The forewings are brownish to brownish yellow in most specimens, the fringed scales are mostly white. The drawing consists of a white basal welt and an extension spot of the same color. The hind wings are light gray. The form known from Switzerland rhombellus Zeller , 1863 is smaller and the whitish extension spot on the forewings is shorter. The yellowish specimens of C. conchella can be confused with the species Catoptria pauperella, which occurs in Eastern Europe . However, in the latter type, the extension spot of the basal welt is smaller and triangular. In the subspecies Catoptria conchella bourgognei , the costal area of the forewing is brownish and the outer edge is paler. The subspecies C. c. pseudopauperella is similar to Catoptria pauperella , but the fore wings are slightly shorter. The extension spot is wider and the dorsal edge is less sloping. The exclusive determination of the species through a genital examination is uncertain, since the genitals of C. conchella and C. pauperella are very similar. In the last-mentioned type, the costalarm of the valves is more or less straight, in the first-mentioned type, however, it is more or less curved.

distribution

Catoptria conchella occurs in the Alps and in Romania ( Transylvania ). There is older evidence from Sweden (only three copies) and one from Holland with only one copy. The reports of finds from Estonia and Poland are doubtful. This presumably also applies to those from Croatia .

In Germany, the species is native only in Bavaria. It is not endangered there and occurs "moderately often". There is either no evidence from other federal states or they are older (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt).

In catoptria conchella is a montane abundant type who settled in the alpine meadows up to 2200 m.

Way of life

The caterpillars live on mossy stones and old trees, where they can be found from April to June. Like other species of the genus, the moths rest upside down on blades of grass during the day. The moths are crepuscular and occur mainly in open, grassy terrain. They fly from June to August.
