Scientific name
Catoptria falsella

Tense butterfly

Catoptria falsella is a butterfly from the family of Crambidae .

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 16 to 24 millimeters (or a fore wing length of 8 to 9 mm). and have white, brown and yellowish-brown marked forewings , which are often striped brown. A narrow, white line extending from the base of the wing extends over the middle of the wing. In the outer area, just before the hem, there is a strongly bulged transverse line with a point set back to the inner edge. The transverse line is crossed in the bulge by three thin dark longitudinal lines starting from the tip of the white longitudinal line. The hind wings are brown-gray.

The caterpillars are greenish, and have a brownish head and a brownish neck shield.

Similar species

The species is very similar to some other Catoptria species, such as C. confusella Staudinger, 1881, C. staudingeri (Zeller, 1863), C. incertella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1852) and C. verellus (Zincken, 1817). Only C. confusella and C. verella occur together with C. falsella . In C. confusella , the longitudinal line starting from the base is shorter and more pointed at the end, the subterminal transverse line is a little further away from the edge and is reversely curved in an S-shape. C. verella does not have a curved submarginal transverse line.

Geographical occurrence and habitat

The species is widespread, often even frequently in almost all of Europe with the exception of the polar regions and in Asia Minor. It only occurs locally on the Iberian Peninsula and the British Isles.

Catoptria falsella prefers dry to moist locations in forests ( mixed and coniferous forests ) and bushland. In the Alps it rises to at least 2000 m.

Way of life

Catoptria falsella forms two generations a year, whose moths fly from mid-May to mid-October. Only one generation is formed in the north of the distribution area. The moths are active at dusk and are attracted to artificial light sources . During the day they hide in the moss on old walls, stones and rocks. The oligophagous caterpillars feed on moss , mainly on wall-toothed moss ( Tortula muralis ), roof-toothed moss ( Tortula ruralis ) and common short-rifled moss ( Brachythecium rutabulum ), but also on other whiskered mosses ( barbula ) and rotary-toothed mosses ( Tortula , family Pottiaceae ). Inside the moss cushions on old walls, roofs, planks, rocks and field stones, the caterpillars create webs in which they winter and pupate.

Systematics and taxonomy

The taxon was first scientifically described in 1775 by Michael Denis and Johann Ignaz Schiffermüller as Crambus falsellus . The holotype came from Saxony and is lost. The species has so far been fairly uniform to the genus Catoptria Huebner, 1825. There are some more recent synonyms .
