Career

Cecil Gordon began his NASCAR career in 1968. He started in ten races. His best result was a 13th place on Beltsville Speedway. In 1969 he drove 51 of the 54 season races for Bill Seifert's team . He came eight times in the top 10 and once in the top 5. From the 1970 season he started with his own car, starting number 24, which has been used by four-time Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon since the 1992 season. Until 1983 he drove in his own car. He drove a total of 450 races and made it into the top 5 29 times, but never managed to win a race or the championship. His best finishes in the championship were third places he took in the 1971 and 1973 seasons. The last year he ran his own car, 1983, he moved to Chrysler . However, he did not have the success he had hoped for and closed his racing team. In 1985 he returned for a race in the Winston Cup. He drove a number 51 Chevrolet from Arnie Sacks. He finished this race in 30th and last place, as he was eliminated after seven laps with steering problems.
