Cedric Haywood

Cedric Haywood (* 31 December 1914 in Houston ; † 9. September 1969 ) was an American jazz - pianist .

Cedric Haywood played in the high school band with Arnett Cobb as a teenager . He began his professional career with an engagement in Chester Boone's band in 1934; then he played from 1935 to 1942 with Milt Larkin , also with Floyd Ray and Lionel Hampton at the end of the decade. In 1942 he also worked for Sidney Bechet . In the mid-1940s Haywood moved to California, then did his military service during World War II and then played for Saunders King in 1948. In the 1950s, Haywood worked mainly for Illinois Jacquet , Cal Tjader and Kid Ory , with whom he performed around 1955 European tour went. He played with Brew Moore in the 1960s , then moved to his hometown of Houston in 1963 . There he worked with local musicians as a band leader and made recordings with the blues singer Lightnin 'Hopkins .
