The Centrum Warenhaus Dresden was a department store of the Centrum Warenhaus at Prager Strasse 17 in Dresden . The building was a “classic example of GDR modernism”. The “honeycomb-shaped, spiky facade that is unparalleled in Germany” was remarkable.

description

The department store surrounded by fallow land , situation around 1980

The department store was built from 1973 to 1978 by Ferenc Simon and Ivan Fokvari . Great importance was attached to the design of the expressively crystalline aluminum facade. The three upper floors were hung with a facade made of anodized aluminum elements. Silver-colored honeycombs formed an "ornamental texture" and clad the cube. There were also department stores in this silver fashion in Frankfurt am Main and Leipzig , the so-called Blechbüchse am Brühl .

Demolition progress

The building was demolished in 2007 for the new construction of the Centrum-Galerie , which opened in autumn 2009. The demolition of the Centrum Warenhaus was controversial. Among other things, the “loss of one of the most idiosyncratic GDR post-war buildings” was seen in it: “Precisely because it was so unadjusted next to it, even in its non-sandstone-compliant material, it was an important testimony to a (today) not understood 1970s architecture. "

The demolition was criticized because the Centrum department store, next to the Kulturpalast and the Rundkino Dresden, is seen as an identity-giving building of Dresden Modernism. In contrast to these two, the Centrum department store was not placed under monument protection. In addition to the department store, an original restaurant building was also demolished.
