Centurian (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Centurian is a red wine variety . It is a new breed between (Carignan x Cabernet Sauvignon) and Grenache. The crossing took place in 1949 by Harold Olmo at the University of California at Davis. The grape variety was launched in 1976.

The mother variety (Carignan x Cabernet Sauvignon) with the name F2-7 was created as early as 1936. The aim of the breeding was to create a variety especially for the dry and hot conditions of the Central Valley area in California that had the character of a Cabernet Sauvignon should wear.

Currently about 87 acres (35.2 hectares) in California (→ Viticulture in California ) are planted with the Carnelian variety. Since the variety is rarely replanted, the populations decrease.

The Carnelian variety was bred with the same parents in 1949 .
