The company was founded in 1818 by Johann Peter Gotlieb Bunge in Amsterdam (Netherlands).
In June 2008, Bunge took over the largest manufacturer of corn syrup , Corn Products International for 4.4 billion US dollars. In Germany, Bunge took over Walter Rau Lebensmittelwerke in 2008 .
