The Certosa di Montebenedetto is a former Carthusian monastery in the municipality of Villar Focchiardo in the lower Susa Valley in the northern Italian region of Piedmont .

history

The Charterhouse was founded in 1197 and settled by monks from the Certosa della Losa near Gravere , founded in 1191 . After the buildings were badly damaged by landslides in the second half of the 15th century, the monastery was transferred to the lower Certosa di Banda in 1498 and to Avigliana in 1598 . After the destruction of the Carthusian monastery of Avigliana by troops of the Duke of Savoy Charles Emanuel I , the monks withdrew to Monte Benedetto in 1630, until the Carthusian monastery of Collegno was built in 1642 .

Todays use

The entire complex is currently being restored. The Romanesque church, which also has Gothic elements due to later extensions , can be visited. It houses a permanent exhibition about the Carthusian monasteries and the monasteries of Montebenedetto and Banda. The monastery church is the only completely preserved structure in the former monastery complex. During the summer months, the building in the Orsiera Rocciavrè Natural Park serves as a cultural and event center.
