Cesnola painter is the emergency name of an anonymous Euboean vase painter of the late Geometric period . His works are dated from around 750 to 740 BC. Dated.

The Cesnola painter got its name after Luigi Palma di Cesnola , whose collection gathered in Cyprus originally included a crater painted by the Cesnola painter. It has been in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York since 1874 (inventory number 74.51.965). The Cesnola crater found in Cyprus is quite unusual in shape and design and has long given rise to speculations about the origin of the artist and work. Thanks to new finds and sound analyzes, the origin from Euboea has now been secured. The painter's works are assigned to the Euboean LG I phase (= Euboean Late Geometric I ).

In his work, the Cesnola painter combines influences from the Near East with traditions from the Greek motherland and island Greek styles. John Boardman postulated strong Naxos influences in particular . He mainly decorated craters and jugs that were found on or in Cyprus, Delos , Samos , Eretria , Lefkandi and Al Mina , among others . His robust style brought several innovations, such as the depiction of goats on trees, connected blobs or hand-painted concentric circles.
