John Nicolas Coldstream

John Nicolas Coldstream (born March 30, 1927 ; died March 21, 2008 ) was a British classical archaeologist .

John Coldstream studied Classics at Eton College and King's College , Cambridge . After the Second World War he was employed by the British Museum's Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities before embarking on an academic career. From 1960 to 1983 he was Professor of Aegean Archeology at Bedford College , then Yates Professor of Classical Art and Archeology at University College London . Since 1957 he was closely associated with the British School at Athens , of which he was a Macmillan student until 1960 .

Coldstream carried out his most important excavations in Kythera and Knossos and presented detailed reports on the Minoan pottery found there. However, he achieved outstanding importance through his intensive research on geometric ceramics , which he examined in their full distribution from the Middle East to Sicily . He published the summarizing result of these investigations, Greek Geometric Pottery: a Survey of Ten Local Styles and their Chronology , in 1968. Coldstream himself was able to revise the basic work in 2008. Not only limited to ceramics, but rather going back further, he worked on the Geometric Time in his standard work Geometric Greece , which appeared in 1977 and was reissued in 2003 in a version that he also revised himself.

Coldstream was a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London , the British Academy and numerous foreign institutions, including the Archaeological Society in Athens founded in 1837 and the German Archaeological Institute . In 2003 he received the Kenyon Medal for Classical Studies from the British Academy .

Since 1970 Coldstream was married to the art historian Nicola Coldstream. In his private life he was considered an excellent pianist.
